about
‘De drenkeling’ (The drowning person) is a song about desire and submission. The protagonist of the story, Pedro, asks the women around him to dominate him. While ‘De onnoemelijk verleidelijkheid van de bezwijkende deugd’ deals with feminine sexual power, impotence and sexual paranoia, ‘De drenkeling’ is sort of a next stage: it is the love song of someone who suffers from a romanic kind of Stockholm syndrome; a person who has lost himself in his desire for sexual ecstasy and who is no longer aware of any possible danger.
The lyrics to ‘De drenkeling’ are based on the dark eroticism of ‘Madame Edwarda’, a work by French writer and philosopher Georges Bataille (1897 - 1962). The song follows the thoughts of the protagonist, Pedro, as he attempts to destroy his own (self-)awareness by metaphorically melting together with his ideal woman:
‘Let our mouths mix in a sickening kiss
And our tongues drown in a sea of lust’.
Compositionally, ‘De drenkeling’ is one of the most rhythmic songs on the demo. It contains a pulsating ska-rhythm with a somewhat uneasy guitar melody, which attempts to illustrate Pedro’s state of mind. The song ends in a climax with a folk-like sound, where we attempted to illustrate both the atmosphere of Paris and the despair of a man whose mind is fully set on losing himself in a never-ending orgasm.
lyrics
Peddel voort
Door mijn weerloze hartstocht
